Job description

These individuals use a variety of tools to detect design errors in products. They are employed in a variety of industries (transportation, manufacturing, etc.) and by industrial inspection companies.

Main tasks

  • Install and calibrate equipment used for non-destructive testing.
  • Develop techniques for testing the product under control.
  • Interpret various measurements (radiographs, conductivity measurements, visual indicators, etc.).
  • Perform tests according to specifications, standards, and safety instructions.
  • Evaluate, compile, and report test results.
  • Perform inspections using different test methods (e.g. vibration analysis).
  • Provide training and supervision of trainees as required.

Training and requirements

Also required

  • Certificate of qualification issued by the ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale (MESS) to obtain authorization to inspect pressure installations.
  • Successful completion of an examination for Industrial Radiographers who use radioactive isotopes to be recognized as an Exposure Device Operator certified by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.

Sometimes required

  • Non-destructive testing certification by Natural Resources Canada is usually required.
  • A Welding Inspector certificate from the Canadian Welding Bureau may be required.
