Audiologists and Speech Therapists

Job description

These individuals assess, diagnose, and treat people who have problems with hearing (hearing loss, tinnitus, etc.), the vestibular system (dizziness), communication (speech, language, voice, etc.) or swallowing. This group includes supervisory positions. These individuals work in:

  • Hospital centres
  • Health and community service centres
  • Long-term care centres
  • Day centres
  • Rehabilitation centres
  • Private clinics
  • Educational institutions

Main tasks

Audiologists

  • Assess hearing and vestibular functions through a variety of tests and examinations.
  • Determine the type and consequences of hearing and vestibular disorders.
  • Develop and implement an adaptation or rehabilitation program.
  • Inform patients about hearing and vestibular disorders and their treatment.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Doing research.
  • Train and supervise trainees and health care staff.
  • Promote hearing health and healthy communication habits.
  • Prevent hearing problems.
  • Mitigate or eliminate impacts and risks related to vestibular disorders, including falls.

Speech Therapists

  • Assess language, voice, speech, and swallowing through a variety of tests, examinations, and observations.
  • Identify the type and consequences of communication and swallowing disorders.
  • Develop and implement intervention plans to correct these disorders or promote autonomy in communication.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Provide counselling and education about communication and swallowing disorders.
  • Conduct research.
  • Train and supervise trainees and staff.
  • Promote healthy communication habits.
  • Prevent communication and swallowing problems.

Advancement and mobility

  • Experience leads to management positions.
  • Provincial licencing leads to mobility between provinces.
