Medical Imaging Technologists - Nuclear Medicine

Job description

These individuals produce metabolic and functional images by scintigraphy and radiation emission. They use radiopharmaceuticals (radioactive medications) to obtain images of body structures. They enable physicians to diagnose and treat lesions and diseases. They work in:

  • Hospitals
  • Oncology centres
  • Clinics
  • Radiology laboratories
  • CEGEPs and universities

  • Controlled ambient temperature

Main tasks

  • Prepare patients for biological samples or administer substances to them.
  • Collect and interpret data.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures on biological specimens and record results.
  • Ensure the proper functioning of equipment.
  • Monitor and care for patients during examinations.
  • Apply safety procedures and instructions.
  • Train and supervise students and other technologists.

Advancement and mobility

  • Additional training enables some mobility between the three groups of Medical Radiation Technologists.
  • These individuals may specialize in various fields (mammography, magnetic resonance imaging, etc.).

Formation

Most training programs are offered in French only.

College

Also required

  • Membership in the Ordre des technologues en imagerie médicale, en radio-oncologie et en électrophysiologie médicale du Québec (OTIMROEPMQ [Quebec Order of Medical Imaging, Radiation Oncology, and Medical Electrophysiology Technologists]).
