Job description

Geomatics Technologists and Technicians collect, analyze, and interpret geospatial data. This data is used for a variety of purposes (natural resource management, geology, environmental research, etc.). These individuals work in the public service, for public utilities, and for various companies (mapping, software, forestry, etc.).

Meteorological Technicians and Technologists observe weather conditions. They write, interpret, and transmit reports of meteorological data. They are employed by:

  • The government
  • The media
  • Companies that exploit natural resources
  • Public utilities and transportation services
  • Private companies

This group includes Technologists and Technicians in the following fields:

  • Aerial Survey and Remote Sensing
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Cartography
  • Photogrammetry

Environment

Main tasks

Aerial Survey and Remote Sensing Technologists and Technicians

  • Prepare images, data, and graphical reports from aerial or satellite data sources.
  • Develop methods and software for producing and integrating image analyses.
  • Verify the quality of recorded images and the integrity and accuracy of collected data.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technologists and Technicians

  • Model, analyze, and display geospatial data.
  • Develop methods and software to assimilate geographic information.
  • Collaborate with external organizations to transfer data.
  • Enter data into systems and review it.
  • Integrate external software packages with GIS software.
  • Train GIS users and provide technical support.

Cartographic Technologists and Technicians

  • Plan map designs.
  • Compile data from photographs, notes, and reports.
  • Produce maps and graphs using computer-aided design and drafting techniques and software.
  • Ensure that maps are complete and accurate.

Photogrammetry Technologists and Technicians

  • Examine and interpret aerial photographs to prepare topographic maps, aerial photo mosaics, and related graphics.
  • Develop three-dimensional models, maps, and tables.
  • Monitor recording quality, adjust equipment as required, and inspect the quality of images collected.

Meteorological Technologists and Technicians

  • Record, analyze, interpret, and transmit atmospheric and meteorological data.
  • Observe, record, and report on waterway ice conditions.
  • Participate in avalanche forecasting and control.
  • Maintain climate databases.
  • Participate in the production of weather maps, graphs, and reports.
  • Set up, adjust, and maintain meteorological facilities and equipment.
