Marriage and Family Therapists
Job description
These individuals help clients identify, understand, and overcome their personal or relationship problems. They specialize in the treatment of particular groups or specific problems (consumption, marital problems, behaviour, etc.). The National Occupational Classification (NOC) includes psychoeducators and sexologists in this group. These individuals are self-employed or work in:
- Counselling centres
- Social service agencies
- Group homes
- Government agencies
- Family therapy centres
- Health care facilities
- Rehabilitation facilities
- Educational institutions
- Community environments
- Private environments
Environment
- Controlled ambient temperature
Main tasks
- Discuss with individuals and help them determine their goals and the means to achieve them.
- Assess problems and people’s success in solving them and progressing toward their goals.
- Provide therapy and mediation services.
- Facilitate group sessions.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of intervention programs.
- Draft reports.
- Testify in court as an expert witness, as required.
- Conduct psychometric assessments.
- Supervise staff.
- Conduct research, publish educational texts and articles, and give lectures.
Psychoeducators
- Develop individualized or group intervention plans.
- Assess coping difficulties and adaptive abilities.
- Design programs to maintain or develop adaptive skills.
- Observe and analyze the person in interaction with their environment.
- Provide information to individuals on health promotion and prevention of illness, accidents, and social problems.
Advancement and mobility
- Experience and additional training are required to access management positions.
- Experience and additional training enable specialization.
Psychoeducators, Sexologists, and Marital and Family Therapists
- Permit issued by the Ordre des psychologues du Québec enables these individuals to bear the title of Psychotherapist and to practice Psychotherapy.
- Family mediation accreditation permit issued by the Ordre des travailleurs sociaux et des thérapeutes conjugaux et familiaux du Québec (OTSTCFQ) enables Psychoeducators to use the title of Accredited Family Mediator.
Marriage and Family Therapists
- Possibility of practicing family mediation provided that an accreditation in family mediation is obtained.
