Job description
These individuals cut and style hair. They also sell hair products. They are self-employed or work in:
- Hair salons and barber shops
- Health care facilities
- Theatres
- Film or television studios

Main tasks
- Suggest or determine hairstyles according to client instructions and preferences.
- Wash and rinse hair, as required.
- Perm and set hair.
- Decolorize, dye, and highlight hair.
- Analyze hair and scalp and give or recommend treatments.
- Lay, clean, and style wigs, hairpieces, and extensions.
- Schedule appointments and order supplies, as required.
- Act as a judge, as required, in contests.
- Cut and trim hair according to customer’s instructions and preferences.
- Shave and trim beards and moustaches, as required.
Advancement and mobility
- Qualified Hairstylists receive a Red Seal endorsement upon successful completion of the Interprovincial Examination.
