Job description

These individuals install, inspect, and repair fire prevention and firefighting systems (e.g. sprinklers). They install and connect the piping to these systems. They work on commercial, industrial, and residential construction sites.

  • Controlled ambient temperature

  • Equipment, machinery, tools
  • Uncontrolled ambient temperature

  • Fire, steam, hot surfaces
  • Falling objects

Main tasks

  • Install overhead piping systems.
  • Prepare and install, as required, underground piping systems.
  • Prepare the piping that connects the automatic sprinkler systems.
  • Maintain and check fire protection systems.
  • Install systems using various substances (water, air, foam, etc.).
  • Interpret plans and technical drawings.

Advancement and mobility

  • Qualified Fire Protection Mechanics obtain a Red Seal endorsement upon successful completion of the Interprovincial Examination.

Training and requirements

Formation

Secondary school diploma

Also required

  • Certificate of qualification.

Sometimes required

  • A journeyman certificate of competence is sometimes required.
