Job description

These individuals design, manufacture, install, and repair sprinkler heating systems. They also maintain and repair plumbing and heating systems.

Main tasks

Pipefitters and Steamfitters

  • Study plans and specifications to establish the layout of the network.
  • Make openings in walls, floors, and ceilings.
  • Choose the type and size of pipe.
  • Measure, cut, drill, bend, and assemble pipes.
  • Install brackets, valves, conduits, and control systems.
  • Check the network for leaks.
  • Clean and maintain the pipes, fittings, and drainage system.
  • Replace worn elements and restart the system.
  • Interpret evaluative specifications, as required.

Sprinkler System Installers and Fire Protection Mechanics

  • Study plans, specifications, and codes in force to establish the network’s route.
  • Install piping, sprinklers, and firefighting equipment.
  • Cut, assemble, and drill pipes.
  • Connect pipes to supply tanks and water mains.
  • Install valves, alarms, and related equipment.
  • Check the network for leaks.
  • Maintain and repair sprinkler systems.
  • Produce evaluative estimates, as required.

Advancement and mobility

  • Qualified Steamfitters and Fire Protection Mechanics obtain a Red Seal endorsement upon successful completion of the Interprovincial Examination.
  • Experience leads to supervisory positions.

The hourly wage is calculated by averaging wages from 2022 to 2024.
