Job description

These individuals inspect motor vehicles to target malfunctions. They repair and maintain mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems and components. They are employed by:

  • Garages
  • Dealers
  • Automobile manufacturers
  • Maintenance centres
  • Gas stations
  • Sales representatives for heavy goods vehicles and trailers
  • Transport companies
  • Car maintenance and repair shops

Main tasks

Motor Vehicle Mechanics

  • Check vehicle components and circuits to target malfunctions.
  • Observe the operation of running engines.
  • Try vehicles on the road.
  • Discuss the work to be done with superiors.
  • Adjust, repair, or replace defective parts or components.
  • Test repaired systems and adjust them to specifications.
  • Carry out periodic maintenance operations (oil change, lubrication, tuning, etc.).
  • Discuss with customers the work done, the overall condition of the vehicles, and other repairs to be planned.

Motor Vehicle Repairers

  • Check vehicle mechanical systems to target malfunctions and identify their nature.
  • Check diagnostics with supervisors to decide whether to repair or replace parts.
  • Repair or replace defective components or parts.
  • Test the repaired components and adjust them according to the specifications.
  • Maintain reports on work performed.

Truck and Trailer Mechanics

  • Set, adjust, repair, or replace parts and components of highway transport truck and heavy truck systems.

Advancement and mobility

  • Experience leads to supervisory positions.
  • These individuals may specialize in various fields (transmission, alignment, suspension, etc.).
  • Qualified Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Truck Trailer Repairers, and qualified Truck and Transport Truck Mechanics obtain a Red Seal endorsement upon successful completion of the Interprovincial Standards Examination.

Motor Vehicle Repairers

  • Training leads to positions as mechanics.
  • Experience leads to supervisory positions.
