Deck and Engine Room Crew
Job description
These individuals operate and maintain deck equipment, engines, and machinery. They work for the public service or waterway transport companies.

Main tasks
- Steer the vessel according to the instructions of the Deck Officer.
- Ensure the operation, maintenance, and repair of deck equipment.
- Assist with routine engine and machinery maintenance and repair.
- Check equipment, machinery, and engine gauges and report any discrepancies to the Engineer Officer of the Watch.
- Ensure the operation and maintenance of valves and pumps for draining liquids.
- Clean machine parts and ensure the cleanliness of the machine room.
- Clean the deck surface, remove rust and scale, and repaint.
- Maneuver and repair docking equipment.
Advancement and mobility
- Training and examinations lead to certificates and certifications (e.g. Marine Emergency Training (MED) certificate).
- Experience, additional training, and a Transport Canada Deck Officer certificate are required for senior positions.
