Job description

These individuals manage activities related to the farming and harvesting of fish, crustaceans, and aquatic plants. They are self-employed or work in hatcheries and commercial aquaculture operations.

Main tasks

  • Target species to be reared, choose suitable locations for their growth, and ensure that conditions are maintained.
  • Coordinate the selection and maintenance of broodstock.
  • Determine nutrient requirements and develop diets for farmed species.
  • Inspect stocks for disease and apply prescribed medical treatments.
  • Design, operate, and maintain livestock and harvesting equipment.
  • Collect and record growth and production data.
  • Manage, train, and supervise staff.
  • Maintain financial records and establish business strategies.
  • Dive in scuba gear, as required, to inspect the farm premises.

  • Permit, licence, or lease for the commercial operation of a fish hatchery or aquaculture establishment for self-employed workers.
