Job description

These individuals operate and maintain facilities that operate oil and gas wells. They cement or treat wells.

Main tasks

Oil and Gas Well Drilling Workers

  • Identify the location of underground pipelines and utilities.
  • Align and manipulate sections of drill pipe.
  • Operate and maintain systems and pumps.
  • Mix drilling mud, chemicals, and additives.
  • Record flow rates and mud volumes and take samples.
  • Operate and maintain diesel engines, drilling rigs, and mechanical components.
  • Participate in the assembly, disassembly, and transportation of maintenance facilities.
  • Supervise staff.

Oil and Gas Well Maintenance Workers

  • Drive trucks for well maintenance to the site.
  • Assemble pumps and connect pipes to the wellhead.
  • Pump materials (e.g. chemicals) into the well.
  • Read instruments to check pressure, density, flow rate, and concentration of the substance.
  • Mix chemical agents and cements, as required.

Advancement and mobility

  • Experience leads to senior and supervisory positions.

  • Train with a qualified attendant.

Sometimes required

  • Oil industry-approved courses are sometimes required.
  • One year of experience as a Floor Helper, Assistant, or Labourer is usually required.
  • The following certificates may be required:
    • First Aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
    • Sensitization to hydrogen sulphide
    • Eruption prevention
    • Well control
    • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
    • Transportation of dangerous goods
    • Cryogenic safety
  • Certification of Drilling Rig Technician(s) from engine manufacturers and riggers may be required.
