Job description

These individuals monitor the operation of drilling and hoisting machines. They direct the work of teams under site manager supervision. They operate specialized equipment to drill, complete, and maintain wells.

Main tasks

Oil and Gas Well Service Rig Drillers and Operators

  • Operate the controls of drilling and hoisting machines.
  • Ensure the training of drilling or assembly teams and direct their work.
  • Maintain records of drilling operations and maintenance work.
  • Ensure that safety procedures are followed.

Well Loggers and Testers and related workers

  • Drive maintenance or drilling trucks to the job site.
  • Assemble equipment, tools, and devices.
  • Lower, position, and retrieve equipment and instruments.
  • Collect data and make preliminary interpretations, as required.

    • First aid
    • Sensitization to hydrogen sulphide
    • Eruption prevention
    • Well control
    • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

    • Oil Well Operator
  • Formal on-the-job training of three to six months and several years of experience in logging and testing or drilling and well maintenance positions required for Well Loggers, Testers, and related workers.
  • A Blaster’s permit to perforate wells.
  • A certificate of Seismic Blaster and Oil Well Blaster to perforate wells.
