Job description

These individuals make moulds, pour molten metal, and operate furnaces. They work in steel mills and in metal casting departments of metal product manufacturers.

Main tasks

Manual Moulders

  • Make moulds using various methods (bench, floor, sand, etc.).
  • Repair and dry moulds.
  • Pour molten metal into moulds to produce castings.

Hand Coremakers

  • Make cores that, once placed inside the moulds, will form cavities in the cast products.
  • Coat the cores with protective substances and then bake them in ovens.

Machine Moulders and Coremakers

  • Prepare, set up, and operate mould and core-making machines.

Metal Melters

  • Prepare and use machines to produce castings of metal products.
  • Cast molten metal into moulds.

Foundry Furnace Operators

  • Use furnaces to melt metals for casting and pouring.

Advancement and mobility

  • There is some mobility between the different positions in this group.
  • Experience leads to supervisory positions.
