Family patrimony
When you marry or form a civil union, you also create a family patrimony. The family patrimony contains the property belonging to you and your spouse.

Family patrimony ensures that the spouses enjoy legal and economic equality, by guaranteeing them a fair share in the joint property.

Residences used by the
family
If you family lives in an apartment in a building (duplex, triplex, etc.) that you own, only the part used by the family is considered to form part of the family patrimony.

Earnings registered under the Québec Pension
Plan
The family patrimony includes all earnings registered during the marriage or civil union under the Québec Pension Plan equivalent programs, such as the Canada Pension Plan.

Partition of the family

The family patrimony is partitioned through a transfer of money a transfer of property of equal value to the amount owed to the other spouse.
