Getting married

Marriage is a legal act. For this reason, you and your intended spouse must take certain steps.

Before your marriage ceremony

Before your marriage ceremony, you and your intended spouse must complete a number of formalities, some with your officiant, such as the court clerk.

Officiants authorized to solemnize a marriage

For your marriage to be valid, it must be solemnized by an officiant recognized by law and authorized to solemnize marriages.

Interview with the officiant

Before the marriage ceremony, you and your intended spouse must meet with the officiant.

Marriage contract

You can sign a marriage contract with your intended spouse before or after you marry. In the latter case, it comes into effect on the day it is signed, rather than on the day of your marriage.
