Québec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) Benefits in the Event of a Termination of Pregnancy

The notion of termination of pregnancy applies to a spontaneous or intentional medical termination of pregnancy, a stillbirth or a stillborn child.

In the event of a termination of pregnancy occurring after the 19th week of pregnancy, you may be entitled to:

  • maternity benefits or exclusive benefits to the person experiencing pregnancy or childbirth
  • exclusive benefits to the woman or the person experiencing pregnancy or childbirth, in the case of a surrogacy project.

A termination of pregnancy has no effect on the payment of these benefits, since they are meant to help you recover from the pregnancy or childbirth.

Subject to exceptions, the benefit period ends no later than 20 weeks after the week when the termination of pregnancy occurs.

The table below indicates the maximum number of weeks of benefits that can be paid and the percentage of average weekly earnings, depending on which plan is chosen.

If you already applied for benefits before the termination of pregnancy, you must quickly call the Centre de service à la clientèle at 1-888-610-7727 so that we can update your file. A member of our team can ensure that you will receive all the benefits to which you are entitled.

If the termination of pregnancy takes place before you submitted your application for benefits, you must submit an application with QPIP as quickly as possible. The benefit start date cannot be earlier than six weeks preceding the date of your application. It is possible that weeks requested before that period will not be granted.

If you need support in your process, contact the Centre de service à la clientèle at 1-888-610-7727. A member of our team will make sure you receive all the benefits to which you are entitled.
