Rules for views and windows
One aspect of feeling “at home” is being safe from prying eyes. For this reason, the Civil Code of Québec contains rules governing the placement of windows or other openings in a wall.
Under these rules, you cannot have “direct views”, i.e. windows or doors with transparent glass, less than 1.5 metres from the dividing line between your property and your neighbour’s property.
This does not apply to:
- openings onto public roads or public parks;
- solid doors or doors with translucent glass (i.e. glass through which objects cannot be clearly distinguished).
A person who co-owns a dividing wall cannot make an opening in that wall without the other co-owner’s permission.
