Verifying your eligibility
To sponsor your father, mother, grandmother or grandfather, you must meet the following conditions.
Confirmation from the Government of Canada of your eligibility as a guarantor
First, you must complete the following two steps with the Government of Canada to sponsor parents and grandparents:
1- Have received an invitation to submit an application to the IRCC;
You must have received an invitation to submit your application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This invitation is sent at random to people who have applied to sponsor their parents or grandparents. For more information, visit the page Sponsor your parents and grandparents of the IRCC website.
2- Have received a letter from the IRCC confirming your eligibility to be a sponsor;
After submitting your sponsorship application to the IRCC, you must have received a letter from the IRCC stating that:
- Was sent to you, not to the person you want to sponsor;
- Indicates that you are eligible to sponsor your parents or grand-parents;
- Invites you to continue the steps you are taking with the Gouvernement du Québec.
Note that, at this stage, IRCC has, in general, recognized your eligibility as a sponsor, but has not yet verified:
- The family relationship between you and the person you want to sponsor;
- The other requirements that the person you want to sponsor must comply with to obtain permanent residence.
Conditions that the person you sponsor must comply with
You must check whether you and the person you want to sponsor comply with the requirements of the Family Reunification Program for sponsoring a parent or a grandparent.
Financial capacity
You must demonstrate that you have sufficient financial resources to comply with your undertaking.
Financial obligations
If you have already made a sponsorship undertaking or undertakings, you must demonstrate that:
- You have honoured your financial obligations;
- If applicable, you have repaid to the Gouvernement du Québec or another province any sum that was disbursed to this person as last resort financial assistance (social assistance).
Criminal record
You must not have been convicted in Canada or abroad of any of the following:
- A sexual offence;
- An attempt or threat to commit a sexual offence;
- An offence resulting in bodily harm against a close friend or relative;
- An offence that is either attempted or threatened, resulting in bodily harm against a close friend or relative
- A violent crime;
- An attempt to commit a violent criminal act.
If you have been convicted of any of these offences, you must:
- Have obtained a final acquittal;
- Or have obtained a suspension of your criminal record;
- Or have completed your sentence at least five years prior to submitting your application.
Family members who may accompany the person you sponsor
The person you wish to sponsor may be accompanied by immediate family members: :
- Husband or wife;
- Common-law partner;
- Dependent child or children;
- The dependent child of his or her dependent child.
A dependent child may be:
- The biological child of the person you sponsor;
- The adopted child by full adoption of the person you sponsor. Full adoption terminates the relationship between the child and his or her family of origin. It creates a new relationship with the adopting parents.
A child who is under 22 years old may not be married or have a de facto spouse.
Children age 22 or over must fulfill these two conditions:
- Be unable to meet their needs due to a physical or mental disability;
- Depend on one parent for most of their financial support, without interruption since reaching the age of 22.
You must declare each member of the family of the person you wish to sponsor on your application form. You must determine which member will accompany the person you sponsor for Québec, or not.
