Warning if you use the services of a recruitment agency for temporary foreign workers

Some agencies recruit workers abroad for Québec employers. Make sure to obtain good information before finding work in Québec with the assistance of a recruitment agency.

Here are some precautions to take if you obtain a job through an agency.

  • Check if the recruitment agency has its recruitment agency licence This hyperlink will open in a new window.;
  • Check the origin of the offer of employment by consulting the website of the employer who is offering the job, for instance;
  • Obtain information about  your rights as a temporary foreign worker.

You do not have to pay recruitment fees. The only fees the employer may ask you to assume are:

  • The fees required to review your application for temporary selection
  • The work permit fees
  • A portion of the air fares in the case of the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) This hyperlink will open in a new window.. (The employer can ask the worker to cover airfare costs in part or in full under the Global Talent Stream, High-Salary Stream, and Simplified Processing. He cannot require it for the agricultural stream, the low-wage stream, and home care providers.)

Also, a recruitment agency cannot require you to give it custody of:

  • Personal documents, such as your passport or your health insurance card; or
  • Goods that belong to you.
