The Secrétariat would like to wish a happy National Indigenous Peoples Day to all of the 10 First Nations and the Inuit Nation in Québec. Today is the longest day of the year, the summer solstice, and a great opportunity for the people of Québec to learn about and appreciate the rich cultural and artistic heritage of each of Québec’s Indigenous nations.
As the enthusiasm for Indigenous art attests to, First Nations and Inuit creators are making a name for themselves here and abroad. We also want to more broadly highlight the growing contribution of Indigenous communities and organizations to tourism, culture and the economy.
Past and future efforts to build a closer relationship
This year, the Secrétariat has implemented a number of initiatives to promote:
- Outreach from Quebecers to First Peoples, through the Indigenous realities campaign
- Protection, promotion and revitalization of Indigenous languages, with four dialogues held recently in four towns across Québec
- Well-being of Indigenous people through a bill establishing the approach of cultural safety in the health and social services network
We intend to keep up the momentum and join Québec’s 11 Indigenous nations in developing policies, programs, agreements and other initiatives that will help them take their rightful place and increase their visibility, autonomy, well-being and development.
