Selling, giving away, or disposing of a firearm as a citizen

If you wish to transfer or sell a firearm, you must file a notice of transfer of ownership. If the firearm has never been registered, a notice of transfer of ownership is not required. The new owner will simply need to apply for registration of the firearm.

Transfer of ownership to a private individual

As soon as you have handed over the registered weapon to the recipient (gift or sale) and you are no longer the owner, you must send a notice of transfer of ownership.

You can use our online service to transfer ownership of a firearm to an individual.

If you are in the presence of the new owner when carrying out the transfer of ownership, they can submit an application to register at the same time.

If the new owner is not in your presence when carrying out this transfer or if they do not wish to apply to register their firearm at this time, you can send the notice of transfer of ownership without the application to register. The new owner will have to apply to register online or by mail as soon as they have taken possession of the firearm for which they have taken ownership.

You must also send a notice of transfer of ownership even if the new owner does not have a residence or place of business in Québec. If the firearm leaves the province of Québec, the new owner is not required to register it with the SIAF.

The notice of transfer of ownership of a firearm must contain the name and contact information, including the address and telephone number, of the person to whom the transfer is made, even if that person does not have a residence or place of business in Québec or the firearm is slated to leave the province of Québec.

As of May 18, 2022, citizens and businesses that transfer or sell a non-restricted firearm must obtain a reference number from the Registrar of the Firearms Registry that confirms the identity of the recipient and the validity of their firearms licence. These new obligations under the Firearms Act are in addition to the obligations under the Firearms Registration Act.
