Use of traps

Some restrictions are in effect during use of traps.

It is forbidden to:

  • use poison, explosives, deleterious substances or electrical discharges when trapping
  • set a snare or leg-hold trap in such a manner that the trapped animal is left hanging without something to rest on
  • use a live capture trap or leg-hold trap whose jaws are equipped with teeth, hooks, claws or barbed wire or other projections
  • set any trap other than a Stoploss model connected to a drowning mechanism or a X type trap (Conibear) model, or their equivalent, in a muskrat lair
  • disturb, destroy or damage a beaver lodge or an animal lair The Government may grant exemptions from this prohibition under certain conditions. Any request in this sense must be addressed to the wildlife protection office of the region concerned.
  • use a dog except to locate a muskrat for the purpose of trapping it. In migratory bird sanctuaries, the dog must be kept on a leash.

Beaver dam

During the period starting 30 days before the opening of the beaver trapping period in the UGAF concerned, you may damage a beaver dam to verify the presence of beaver.

Muskrat lair

During the muskrat trapping period, you may open its lair to install a trap. You must close it immediately after installing the trap.
