New information on trapping rules and notices

The trapping regulations are valid from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2026. They are updated every two years.

Here is where you can consult new information and changes made during the year.

Changes to renewal requirements and other standards for fur trade permits

To renew a fur trader’s permit, all applicants must now have done the following:

  • Submitted to the Minister before September 10 of the current year, if applicable:
    • Copies of completed numbered register forms for the purchase of undressed pelts from hunted or trapped animals;
    • Copies of cancelled forms from this register or;
    • The last completed register number if no pelts were traded during the permit validity period;
  • Paid the fees due for their fur trader permit before September 10 of the current year.

In the case of a permit renewal application, failure to meet  these conditions disqualifies the permit holder from obtaining a new permit for the following year.

Use of killing snares for canids

In preparation for possible new regulation on the use of killing snares for canids, the Ministère has published a list of recommended models and components for the design and use of snares.  An illustrated document (PDF 1.77 Mb) showing the best killing snare designs for foxes, lynx, coyote and wolf is available in the Traps authorized by species section. These new devices are authorized under trapping regulations.

Changes during the year

Other regulatory changes may occur during the year. If so, these changes are announced in our News section.
