Riding an electric bike

People riding an electric bike must follow the same traffic rules that apply to all cyclists. However, certain additional rules apply specifically to the use of e-bikes. These rules also apply to trips made using shared e-bike services.

A helmet must be worn when riding an electric bike.

A bicycle helmet can reduce the severity of a traumatic brain injury resulting from a collision or a fall.

To ride an electric bike, a person must be 18 years of age or older.

However, individuals aged 14 to 17 who hold a licence authorizing the operation of a moped may also ride an e-bike.

It is prohibited to consume alcohol or drugs while riding a bicycle.

Operating an electric bike while impaired by alcohol or drugs may constitute an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada.

To be operated on public roads, an e-bike must be equipped with an electric motor rated at 500 watts or less, and the electric assist must cease when the bicycle reaches a speed of 32 km/h or less
