The development of digital competency is a lifelong process. The content for developing digital competency aims to prepare students to use digital technology in a thoughtful, safe and responsible manner. It enables them to acquire a solid foundation that will guide them throughout their schooling as well as in their personal and professional lives.

Elementary education

Implementation of the content is optional for the 2026‑2027 and 2027‑2028 school years. It will become compulsory starting in the 2028‑2029 school year.
The content for developing digital competency (PDF 2.85 Mb) (in French only, English forthcoming) is intended to support elementary school students so that they acquire the knowledge and know-how necessary to develop their digital competency.
To do so, seven content areas have been developed. Each content area is detailed in an information sheet that provides the essentials needed to convey the content.
Optional content for secondary education will be released for the 2027‑2028 school year. It will become compulsory starting in the 2028‑2029 school year, along with the content for elementary education.
Conveying the content
The content is conveyed to students through structured educational interventions or any other strategy deemed appropriate to the educational aim or context.
As the elements of content do not constitute a subject, they are not evaluated. However, students may be provided with feedback on their learning. Simple mechanisms should be implemented to ensure that students are being presented with the content and that they understand it.
