Preparing for an Interview
Preparing for Your Interview
Steps to take when called by an employer
What to do when an employer calls you in for an interview.
- Carefully note the date, time and place of the meeting
- Try to find out how many people will be at the interview.
- Find out whether there will be a written exam to take.
You may also ask what specific types of tests will be used so that you can prepare better—e.g., tests related to intelligence, knowledge, personality, physical aptitudes, etc.
Preparing before the interview
Before the interview, make sure you're familiar with the company's activities and clientele. Visit the company's website for more information.
Read the job offer to find out what skills the employer is looking for and what tasks are related to the position. You'll then be able to link the skills you're looking for to the experience listed in your résumé.
Anticipate the employer’s questions and have answers prepared. Simulate interviews with your friends. Try to memorize the main points you want to cover.
Make sure you know how to get to the interview location. You'll be able to estimate how long it will take you to get there.
Documents you should bring to the interview
It may be useful to have printed documents with you that the employer may want to consult, such as:
- your résumé and cover letter
- copies of your diplomas
- your portfolio, if you have one
- a list of your references.
Request for assistance in preparing for your interview
Resources are available to help you prepare for an interview, including employability services organizations or assistance officers from your local Services Québec offices.
