Parts Clerk

Job description

These individuals sort, store, and ship parts and supplies for companies. They process orders, manage inventories, and sell parts. They may specialize in a particular category of parts (e.g. automobiles, heating systems, etc.). They are employed by:

  • Manufacturing plants
  • Warehouses
  • Retail and wholesale businesses
  • Mining companies
  • Forestry or construction companies
  • Repair shops
  • Recreational vehicle shops (motorcycles, snowmobiles, caravans, etc.)
  • Recycled parts centres

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature

Main tasks

  • Maintain the inventory of available items and record of orders and deliveries.
  • Carry out research to replenish parts and supplies.
  • Prepare and manage orders.
  • Store and label items in an organized manner to ensure they are easily identifiable and accessible.
  • Sell vehicle parts and accessories that best meet the needs of customers.
  • Advise customers.

Advancement and mobility

  • Experience or additional training leads to supervisory positions.
  • Qualified Parts Attendants receive a Red Seal endorsement upon successful completion of the Interprovincial Examination.

Training and requirements

Formation

Secondary school diploma

Also required

  • Competence card from the Comité paritaire de l'industrie des services automobiles de la région de Québec (CPA Québec [Parity committee of the automotive services industry of the Quebec City Region]) or Certificate of qualification.

Sometimes required

  • A Class 5 driver's licence is often required.
  • A Lift Truck Operator’s competency card is sometimes required or considered an asset.
  • Related experience in office or warehouse work may be required.
