Job description

These individuals survey, assess, design, build, and maintain gardens and landscaped environments. They study, grow, and care for plants and trees. They advise customers on horticultural matters. They are self-employed or work for:

  • Landscaping designers and contractors
  • Lawn service and tree care companies
  • Golf courses
  • Parks
  • Nurseries and greenhouses
  • Municipalities

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature
  • Climatic conditions
  • Equipment, machinery, tools
  • Hazardous chemical
  • Odours

Main tasks

Tree and Shrub Specialists and Tree Service Technicians

  • Examine trees and shrubs to identify problems and diseases.
  • Prune, spray, repair, and inject treatment solutions into damaged areas.

Golf Course Superintendents

  • Lead the landscaping staff.
  • Plant and transplant trees.
  • Apply fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, and pesticides.

Horticulturists

  • Plan and coordinate the growth of plants for landscaping.

Landscape Designers and Landscape Architectural Technicians and Technologists

  • Study and analyze land.
  • Prepare drawings and sketches.
  • Draft reports.
  • Assist in designing landscaping projects.

Landscape Gardeners

  • Create and landscape complete landscaped environments.
  • Plant and maintain lawns and gardens.

Lawn Care Specialists

  • Visit customers.
  • Assess lawn conditions.
  • Apply fertilizer, pesticides, and other maintenance products.
