Job description

These individuals evaluate the physical fitness and movement dynamics of persons for the purposes of prevention, performance, and treatment. They create individualized, safe physical fitness programs and intervention plans. They promote exercise and healthy lifestype habits. The provide advice on how to prevent accidents and illnesses. Their clientele is diverse (athletes, elderly people, diabetics, etc.). They are self-employed or work for:

  • Hospital centres, rehabilitation centres, and polyclinics
  • Residential and long-term care centres (CHSLDs)
  • Local Community Service Centres (CLSCs)
  • Youth shelters and care homes for disabled individuals
  • Sports, recreation, and fitness centres
  • Educational institutions

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature
  • Equipment, machinery, tools

Main tasks

  • Establish a helping relationship with the person through a one-on-one consultation.
  • Demonstrate how to do the exercises prescribed and how to use the training equipment.
  • Implement health, safety, and wellness programs in the workplace.
  • Conduct research to help develop and test new training equipment.
  • Collaborate with other sports health professionals (physiotherapists, occupational therapists, chiropractors, etc.). In rehabilitation:
  • Develop programs that include exercises to improve body and joint flexibility.
  • Intervene with individuals undergoing rehabilitation (physical, functional, cardiovascular, etc.).
  • Draft reports on patient progress. In athletic training (amateur or professional):
  • Design a specific training program aimed primarily at improving the athlete’s performance.
  • Provide support to individuals in good health for preventive purposes to help them maintain their level of fitness or get back into shape. Facilitation and sports organization:
  • Lead a group of individuals in the practice of a sport in order to improve or maintain their physical fitness, team spirit, and self-esteem.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate recreational sports programs and activities.
