Job description

These individuals are involved in the assessment, examination, and treatment of clients. Some, such as hearing aid specialists, work independently. Others assist the following health care professionals:

  • Audiologists
  • Speech Therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature

Main tasks

Audioprosthetists

  • Examine adults to determine the degree of hearing loss using assessment techniques and electroacoustic testing.
  • Recommend and prescribe appropriate hearing aids.
  • Take an impression of the ear to make the hearing aid.
  • Install, adjust, and modify hearing aids, as required.
  • Advise customers on the use, care, and maintenance of the equipment.
  • Follow up with clients and adjust their devices as needed.

Audiometric Technicians

  • Conduct sound screening tests to determine a person’s hearing threshold and record the results.
  • Explain procedures to customers.
  • Monitor, verify, and calibrate hearing equipment.
  • Take ear impressions of individuals, as required.
  • Install and adjust hearing aids.

Speech Therapist and Communication Disorder Assistants

  • Assist Speech Therapists in evaluating individuals.
  • Run treatment programs.
  • Develop materials for use with clients, under the supervision of Speech Therapists.
  • Document people’s progress in rehabilitation.
  • Check and maintain equipment and therapeutic materials.

Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Assistants

  • Run treatment programs under supervision.
  • Ensure the rehabilitation of people with disabilities to optimize their daily activities.

Rehabilitation Assistants

  • Prepare and maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Assist individuals with their rehabilitation activities.
