Main tasks
Immigration Officers
- Study the official papers of people who wish to enter the country and interview them to assess their eligibility to apply.
- Grant landed immigrant status, admit applicants, or order their detention or deportation.
- Search for and arrest those suspected of violating immigration laws.
- Solicit other countries to admit people for deportation and provide them with the necessary travel documents.
- Act as a witness in immigration appeal cases.
Border Services Officers and Customs Inspectors
- Interview people at the border to assess the admissibility of goods and customs duties.
- Inspect baggage for undeclared goods and contraband.
- Educate manufacturing and shipping companies about customs laws and regulations.
- Verify the manufacture of items subject to customs regulations.
- Identify the content of shipment carriers coming from abroad and ensure that the merchandise complies with the regulations in force.
- Verify merchandise imported by mail.
- Arrest and detain those suspected of committing an offence pending police intervention.
