Job description

These individuals carry out various operations related to the management of incoming and outgoing mail. Some provide customer service.

Environment

Main tasks

Postal Clerk

  • Calculate postal rates and stamping letters, parcels, and registered mail.
  • Sell stamps, pre-stamped envelopes, and money orders.
  • Collect payments.
  • Route mail according to established procedures.
  • Sign or obtain signatures from mail recipients and keep records.
  • Respond to inquiries.
  • Complete forms for change of address, theft, or loss of mail.
  • Maintain records of transactions and cash out on a daily basis.

Mailroom Clerk

  • Sort and distribute mail, faxes, messages, and parcels.
  • Maintain address directories and prepare customized mailing lists.
  • Print and photocopy documents, stuff them into envelopes, and address them.
  • Weigh outgoing mail, calculate postage charges, and meter mail.
  • Operate and maintain printing and mailing equipment.

Advancement and mobility

  • Experience or additional training allows access to supervisory or management positions.
