Job description

These individuals assemble structural steel components that are used to build various structures (buildings, bridges, etc.). They work for:

  • Industrial metal manufacturing companies
  • Residential, commercial, or institutional sectors
  • Metalwork manufacturing plants
  • Structural Steel Contractors

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature
  • Equipment, machinery, tools
  • Odours
  • Hazardous workplaces
  • Noise
  • Falling objects

Main tasks

  • Interpret assembly drawings and specifications.
  • Select the equipment required to perform the work.
  • Identify the welding to be carried out.
  • Determine the assembly sequences.
  • Drill, grind, and cut components.
  • Make thermal and mechanical assemblies.
  • Handle and prepare assemblies.
  • Report technical specifications to other employees.
  • Check the dimensions and angles of the components.
  • Finish and check the part after welding.

Advancement and mobility

  • Qualified Structural Steel Workers receive a Red Seal endorsement upon successful completion of the Interprovincial Examination.
  • The structural steel working trade is closely related to that of Structural Steel Erectors. Erectors work on construction sites while Assemblers work in factories.
