Job description

These individuals make, assemble, adjust, and install metal parts. They contribute to the construction of various structures (buildings, bridges, tanks, etc.).

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature
  • Equipment, machinery, tools

  • Fire, steam, hot surfaces
  • Falling objects

Main tasks

  • Study drawings, specifications, and engineering plans and identify the materials required to design the parts.
  • Plan the sequence of tasks to be performed in order to cut metal in the most efficient manner.
  • Develop models or templates to be used as assembly guides.
  • Draw reference points and patterns on metal parts.
  • Install, lift, and move materials in warehouses or on the job site.
  • Assemble and adjust metal sections and plates.
  • Set up and use various machines to shape metal.
  • Install finished components into the final product.

Advancement and mobility

  • Qualified Structural Steel Erectors obtain a Red Seal endorsement upon successful completion of the Interprovincial Standards Examination.
  • Some Structural Steel Erectors may also be certified as qualified Welders.
  • Experience leads to supervisory positions.
