Pipefitters and Steamfitters
Job description
These individuals design, manufacture, install, and repair sprinkler heating systems. They also maintain and repair plumbing and heating systems.

Main tasks
Pipefitters and Steamfitters
- Study plans and specifications to establish the layout of the network.
- Make openings in walls, floors, and ceilings.
- Choose the type and size of pipe.
- Measure, cut, drill, bend, and assemble pipes.
- Install brackets, valves, conduits, and control systems.
- Check the network for leaks.
- Clean and maintain the pipes, fittings, and drainage system.
- Replace worn elements and restart the system.
- Interpret evaluative specifications, as required.
Sprinkler System Installers and Fire Protection Mechanics
- Study plans, specifications, and codes in force to establish the network’s route.
- Install piping, sprinklers, and firefighting equipment.
- Cut, assemble, and drill pipes.
- Connect pipes to supply tanks and water mains.
- Install valves, alarms, and related equipment.
- Check the network for leaks.
- Maintain and repair sprinkler systems.
- Produce evaluative estimates, as required.
Advancement and mobility
- Qualified Steamfitters and Fire Protection Mechanics obtain a Red Seal endorsement upon successful completion of the Interprovincial Examination.
- Experience leads to supervisory positions.
