Job description

These individuals trap and hunt wild animals for their skins or to sell them alive.

Environment

  • Climatic conditions

Main tasks

Trappers

  • Place bait in traps and place traps along trails.
  • Inspect trapping routes.
  • Remove captured animals and replace traps.
  • Slaughter and skin captured animals to keep their skin.
  • Process and pack hides for sale.
  • Trap live animals for sale or movement.
  • Maintain and repair trapping equipment.
  • Maintain trails and access to trapping routes.
  • Trap animals designated for premium or control programs.
  • Control the animal population in trapping areas to ensure the viability of the resource, as required.

Hunters

  • Locate and track wild animals.
  • Slaughter wildlife with firearms or other weapons.
  • Skin slaughtered animals to keep their skin.
  • Process and pack hides, and transport them to processing plants or public auctions.
  • Maintain hunting equipment.
  • Control the animal population in hunting areas to ensure the viability of the resource, as required.

Advancement and mobility

  • Specific areas may be allocated to trappers based on their experience and jurisdiction.
  • These individuals may specialize in trapping or hunting a particular species of animal.
