Job description

These individuals ensure the conformity of wood products and classify them according to industry standards. They work for:

  • Sawmills
  • Wood treatment and processing plants
  • Particle board manufacturers

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature
  • Equipment, machinery, tools
  • Nontoxic dust
  • Uncontrolled ambient temperature
  • Noise

Main tasks

Lumber Graders

  • Examine lumber for defects (knots, holes, cracks, etc.).
  • Sort lumber for drying, delimbing, or further processing.
  • Measure, grade, and sort wood according to industry standards and mark it to indicate its quality.
  • Keep records of the quantity of lumber.
  • Prepare reports.

Other Wood Processing Inspectors and Graders

  • Ensure that panels and shingles comply.
  • Indicate defects and sort for repair or further processing.
  • Measure wood products, ensure compliance with specifications, and grade and label them according to quality standards.
  • Complete and maintain inspection and grading reports.
