Obtaining abortion services

Procedure for obtaining abortion services

Before making an appointment, you will need to take a urine pregnancy test to ensure that you are, in fact, pregnant. You can buy a pregnancy test over the counter at a pharmacy or get one for free in some CLSCs. To find a CLSC or pharmacy near you, see the Finding a CLSC This hyperlink will open in a new window. page.

Once the pregnancy is confirmed, if you wish, you can talk to the available resources who will help you with making your decision.

If you decide to terminate your pregnancy, you will have to make an appointment for an abortion. To find a resource in your sector, see the Finding a Resource Offering Abortion Services This hyperlink will open in a new window. page.

When making the appointment, you will be asked the following information:

  • your name;
  • your telephone number;
  • your health insurance number (RAMQ), if you have one;
  • the first day of your last menstrual period, if you know it.

If you call outside opening hours, you will be able to leave a message by indicating the best time to reach you. The return call will be fully confidential.

Help for adolescents

Adolescents can also consult a nurse at their school or in a CLSC for help. To find a CLSC, see the Finding a CLSC This hyperlink will open in a new window. page.

In any case, it is important to talk to a trusted person, such as a parent, teacher or the school social worker.
