Indication of the origin of Québec fruits and vegetables

Consumers want to know the precise origins of the fruits and vegetables they purchase, for various reasons:

  • They are looking for high-quality fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • They want to support certain producers.
  • They want to buy local.
  • They want to avoid supporting certain producers or countries by purchasing their products (for political, humanitarian or other reasons).

Retailers’ obligations

Fresh fruits and vegetables grown in Québec must be traceable at the retail point of sale. Retailers must indicate that these agricultural products were grown in Québec:

  • When they are prepackaged or sold in bulk at retail, such as at markets, fruit stands and grocery stores
  • In all advertising for their sale, including flyers and posters

To avoid confusion, the authorized expressions are:

  • Product of Québec
  • Grown in Québec
  • Harvested in Québec
  • Name of the product, followed by “of Québec” (e.g., strawberries of Québec)
