Warning if you use the services of a recruitment agency for temporary foreign workers

Some agencies recruit workers abroad for Québec employers. Make sure to obtain good information before finding work in Québec with the assistance of a recruitment agency.

Here are some precautions to take if you obtain a job through an agency.

  • Check if the recruitment agency has its recruitment agency licence;
  • Check the origin of the offer of employment by consulting the website of the employer who is offering the job, for instance;
  • Obtain information about  your rights as a temporary foreign worker.

You do not have to pay recruitment fees. The only fees the employer may ask you to assume are:

  • The fees required to review your application for temporary selection
  • The work permit fees
  • A portion of the air fares in the case of the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP). (The employer can ask the worker to cover airfare costs in part or in full under the Global Talent Stream, High-Salary Stream, and Simplified Processing. He cannot require it for the agricultural stream, the low-wage stream, and home care providers.)

Also, a recruitment agency cannot require you to give it custody of:

  • Personal documents, such as your passport or your health insurance card; or
  • Goods that belong to you.

If in doubt, do not hesitate to contact:
