Financial assistance for disaster victims affected by Hurricane Fiona

If Hurricane Fiona has affected you, you can apply for financial assistance. Please contact your insurer before applying. Public information sessions will be held in the Îles-de-la-Madeleine and a temporary office will be opened.

Objective

The General Indemnity and Financial Assistance Program Regarding Actual or Imminent Disasters is designed to provide last resort assistance to property owners and tenants affected by a disaster.

The types of disasters indicated below are eligible :

  • flooding caused by torrential rains, ice jams, or rapid snowmelt causing watercourses to overflow;
  • shoreline erosion;
  • submersion;
  • landslides;
  • earthquakes.

Eligibility requirements

Property owners and tenants of a principal residence can apply for financial assistance and compensation.

In case of flooding

To be eligible, you must meet one of the following conditions:

  • be the owner or tenant of the principal residence and live there.
  • be the owner of the principal residence, live there, and rent part of it to a tenant for whom it is also his or her principal residence.
  • own and live in the building essential to the operation of your business:
    • if your business is incorporated, you must own at least 50% of the voting shares of the corporation
    • if your business is incorporated as a partnership, you must share at least 50% of the profits of the partnership

If you own a building that is essential to the operation of your business or if you own a rental building without living there, you must apply under the Businesses and the owners or rental buildings This hyperlink will open in a new window. (French only) section.

In the event of other disasters

To be eligible, you must be the owner or tenant of the principal residence.

Supporting documents are required to confirm your identity and eligibility.

Apply for financial assistance

If you have been affected by a flood, be sure you have identified yourself as a disaster victim with your municipality and contacted your insurer before applying for financial assistance and compensation. If you have flood coverage, it may cover your damages. If you have insufficient or no flood coverage, you may be eligible for financial assistance and compensation.

If you have been affected by a disaster other than a flood, make sure you have contacted your insurer before applying for financial assistance and compensation. If you have disaster coverage, you are not eligible for the financial assistance and compensation program.

If you are unable to file your application by the deadline, you must explain in writing to the Ministère de la Sécurité publique why you are unable to act sooner.

For fast service, apply for financial assistance and compensation online.

After submitting your application, you will access your online claim. You will then be able to:

  • learn about the amounts of indemnities that can be granted for certain losses by filling in the lists;
  • add your required documents and your supporting documents;
  • contact the agent in charge of your claim.

To apply for financial assistance and compensation, you must:

  • complete and sign the necessary forms according to your situation;
  • provide copies of the required documents;
  • forward the signed forms and copies of required documents to the Direction générale du rétablissement.
