Motorized mobility aids authorized to use public roads

Only devices that meet the description of a motorized mobility aid (AMM) below may be used on public roads. Please note that not all three- and four-wheel mobility scooters sold on the market conform to this definition.

An MMA is defined as an electric wheelchair or other device designed to compensate for an inability to walk and meeting the following characteristics:

  • is designed to accommodate a single person;
  • has a seat with a backrest, which cannot be straddled, as well as a footrest and armrests;
  • has no pedals;
  • is powered by an electric motor;
  • runs on three or four wheels;
  • has a maximum width of 75 cm (including equipment), unless the use of the AMM is prescribed to the driver by a health professional.

Is not considered an MMA, a vehicle that:

  • has a passenger compartment or sides enclosed by a transparent or opaque material, whether rigid or soft;
  • has been modified to meet the definition of an MMA (e.g., golf cart);
  • is home-made.

Compliant equipment

For your own safety and that of other road users, you must make sure that the equipment on your electric wheelchair, three-wheel mobility scooter or four-wheel mobility scooter is compliant and functional.
