Description of part-time French courses for immigrants
Part-time in-class French courses allow you to learn French for only a few hours a week.
The courses focus on life in Québec and cover, among other things:
- The labour market;
- Culture;
- Values.
Levels
Courses are for beginners and intermediates.
The levels of spoken and written French developed in the courses are beginner and intermediate according to the Échelle québécoise des niveaux de compétence en français (Québec Scale - in French only).
The beginner level comprises levels 1 to 4 of the Québec Scale. Below are some examples of course content:
- Gathering information before buying food;
- Consulting a healthcare professional;
- Finding and renting accommodation
The Intermediate level comprises levels 5 to 8 of the Québec Scale. Below are some examples of course content:
- Writing a cover letter to accompany your resumé;
- Discussing current events with someone;
- Finding out about regional economic activities in Québec.
Assessment
An assessment test may be necessary to evaluate your knowledge of French. The assessment may:
- Approximately 15 to 60 minutes, depending on your level;
- Spoken and, if necessary, written.
Free of charge
French courses are free. There are no admission or tuition fees.
You may be required to pay a small fee for educational materials, certain activities or cultural outings as part of your course.
Schedule
Part-time courses are taught:
- In class or, if needed, at a distance;
- during the day or the evening;
- Weekdays (Monday to Friday) or weekends (Saturday or Sunday).
The number of hours per week may vary from 4 to 24 hours.
You can choose the schedule that works best for you when you apply for admission.
A course session generally lasts 10 weeks.
Location
Part-time courses are taught in school service centres, school boards and partner organizations of the Québec government.
You'll need to select the location where you want to take the course when you apply for admission.
Some courses may be offered at a distance. You must be in Québec to take a distance learning course.
