ÉKIP is a reference framework of actions to take to promote health and well-being and prevent problems among young people of school-age in order to contribute to student perseverance and educational success.

It is designed for professionals working in the education, health and social service and community networks. ÉKIP encourages these networks to work together to maximize the impact of their actions and to provide young people with the tools needed to handle the real-life situations they encounter.

The ÉKIP framework presents effective, recognized means for working with preschool children and with elementary and secondary school students attending public and private schools in Québec.

Aims

  • Develop and strengthen personal and social skills among young people.
  • Contribute to the development of healthy, safe and caring living environments, which includes ensuring that young people have access to the services they need at school or in their community.
  • Promote consistency (continuity and complementarity) in school, family and community interventions, and congruence between the actions taken in the health and social services and education networks.
  • Equip young people of school-age with tools to handle the real-life situations they encounter.

By focusing on competencies that are common to several health themes, the ÉKIP framework allows for the planning of integrated actions that address young people’ health, well-being and success without having to create specific activities for each theme.

In addition to developing competencies, it is important to implement actions in young people’s living environments in order to optimize their overall development.

More specifically, the ÉKIP framework:

  • identifies seven competencies to be developed that pertain to several health themes or topics and contribute to the educational success of young people
  • specifies the organizational conditions that help anchor actions in regular school practices, support the consistent implementation of these actions and encourage the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders
  • designates the areas of knowledge to prioritize and the concrete actions to take at each level of instruction, preschool through Secondary V, to make school environments conducive to learning
    • is based on a positive perspective of youth development, focusing on young people’s strengths and on the achievement of their full potential, rather than on a perspective that focuses on “problems”

Background and collaborations

The ÉKIP framework is the result of a rigorous process carried out in partnership by the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS), the Ministère de l’Éducation and the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ).

The expert recommendations in the document entitled Educational Success, Health and Well-being: Effective Action in Schools – Synthesis of Recommendations This hyperlink will open in a new window. (INSPQ 2010) served as a starting point for the ÉKIP approach. More details are available, in French only, in the publication entitled Pour des interventions intégrées et efficaces de promotion et prévention en contexte scolaire: Assises théoriques, modèle et savoirs incontournables This hyperlink will open in a new window. (INSPQ 2014).

The health, well-being and educational success of young people are the responsibility of both the health and social services network and the education network, as stated in the Agreement for the Complementarity of Services between the Education Network and the Health and Social Services Network, entitled Two Networks, One Objective: The Development of Youth This hyperlink will open in a new window. and signed in 2003.

Under this agreement, the Healthy Schools approach was retained for the implementation of effective promotion and prevention actions in schools. The ÉKIP framework is a continuation of the work carried out in connection with this approach: it is a comprehensive intervention approach to support the planning of actions in schools, coordinated by professionals in the health and social services and education networks in collaboration with families and communities. The goal is to take action with students and in their living environments.
