How to Make a Good Impression

It’s essential to make a good impression during an interview if you want to get the job you’re applying for. Here are a few tips to help you maximize your chances.

What to do before the interview

  • Avoid wearing loud jewellery or strong perfume. Take off your hat.
  • Don’t chew gum.
  • Be on time, or even 5 to 10 minutes early
  • Turn off your cell phone.

What to do during the interview

  • As you arrive, say "hello" to everyone present at the interview. Introduce yourself and give them a firm handshake and a sincere smile..
  • Remain calm and self-confident.
  • Look your interviewers in the eye and answer their questions in a firm voice. Take the time to think through your answers.
  • Be enthusiastic. Give positive answers and stress your strengths and skills.
  • Address your interviewers as Mr. or Ms…
  • Let your interviewers lead the interview.
  • Listen to questions carefully and, if necessary, ask your interviewer to repeat them or to be more specific.

What to do toward the end of the interview

  • You may be asked if you have any questions. Take this opportunity to reiterate your interest in the company and the job to be filled. Here are a few examples of questions you may wish to ask:
  • Why is the employer hiring someone at this time?
  • How many people work in the team or department in question?
  • What is the next step?

What to do at the end of the interview

Thank the people who conducted the interview and shake their hand as you leave. You can also leave your business card.

What to do after the interview

The interview is over. You’ve earned a break, but don’t put away your job search folder just yet. This is the time to assess the interview and your performance.

  • What kind of impression do you think you made on the employer?
  • What were the strong points of the interview?
  • Did you have trouble answering any questions?
  • Were you able to highlight your strengths?
  • Did you forget anything?
  • What’s the next step?
  • Did you learn anything new or important about the employer?
