Specialized Nurse Practitioners (SNP)
Job description
These individuals have additional training and experience in nursing. They deal with all aspects of people’s health (health-related needs, gathering information and history, advice on healthy living, etc.). They work in a variety of settings, including:
- Hospitals
- Family medicine groups
- Integrated social services centres
- Residential and long-term care centres (CHSLD)
- Youth centres
- Specialized outpatient clinics
Environment

Main tasks
- Prescribe medications, diagnostic tests, and medical treatments.
- Collaborate with the attending physician to identify health problems and establish care and treatment.
- As required, independently initiate treatment for the following chronic health problems:
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- Hypercholesterolemia
- Asthma
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases
- Hypothyroidism
- Use diagnostic techniques that are invasive or pose a risk of injury.
- Provide clinical support to nurses and other professionals.
- Contribute to the follow-up of previously diagnosed patients.
- Design, implement, and evaluate health programs.
- Develop and implement educational programs.
- Collaborate in the development of training programs for nurses.
- Conduct clinical medical research.
