Job description

These individuals facilitate access to documents for library users. They are involved in the description of new acquisitions and the processing and preservation of various documents. They work in libraries and public archives.

Main tasks

Library Technicians

  • Facilitate access to information resources for users.
  • Catalogue new library acquisitions under the direction of a librarian.
  • Search for references using manual and automated systems.
  • Make interlibrary loans.
  • Assist librarians in facilitating tours and providing specialized programs according to client needs.

Public Archives Technicians

  • Participate in creating inventories, forms, and research tools.
  • Implement and maintain classification plans and preservation schedules.
  • Apply standards and policies for the preservation of various documents.
  • Search, locate, codify, and classify documents.
  • Microfilm archival documents and file them in databases.
  • Transfer documents according to their state (active, semi-active, or permanent preservation).
  • Purge, sort, and sample documents collections produced by an individual or organization (archival holdings).
  • Participate in user training and support.
  • Ensure the proper application of procedures for the use of computerized document management systems.
