Income Earned or Received While Receiving Parental Insurance Benefits for a Pregnancy or Birth

You can work or gradually return to your job while you are receiving parental insurance benefits.

Income That You Can Earn or Receive Without Reducing Your Benefits

While you are receiving benefits, you can earn or receive a set amount without any reduction in your benefits.

To determine this amount, you must calculate the difference between your average weekly earnings, as determined by the Québec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP), and the benefit amount.

Make sure that the sum of your benefit amount and your income earned or received does not exceed your average weekly insurable earnings determined by the QPIP, because your benefits could be reduced.

For more information, contact the Centre de service à la clientèle at 1 888 610-7727.

Example of calculations

Ève's benefits are calculated based on earnings of $1,000 per week. This is the maximum she can reach by combining her work income and her benefits of $550 per week.

Ève wants to return to work during the holiday season. Therefore, she could earn up to $450 per week without any reduction in her benefits ($1,000 in earnings per week used for calculations minus $550 in benefits at 55% of earnings for the basic plan.)

Change in Your Benefit Weeks

If you earn or receive income while you are receiving benefits, it could be more advantageous to change the distribution of your benefit weeks to avoid for your benefit amount to be reduced.

You can change the distribution of your benefit weeks by accessing your online file or by contacting the Centre Centre de service à la clientèle.

Income to Be Declared

You must declare, without delay, the income received or earned during the weeks in which you receive parental insurance benefits. Income to be declared includes

  • gross salary
  • amounts paid for days off (vacation, statutory holidays, and sick days)
  • performance bonuses
  • income replacement indemnities paid by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec, the Commission des normes, de l'équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail, an insurance company, etc.
  • net business income as a self-employed worker
  • insurable remuneration under the QPIP for intermediate resources or family-type resources

If you cannot declare the amounts and dates immediately, you must do so as soon as possible, using your online file or by contacting the Centre de service à la clientèle.

Intermediate Resource and Family-Type Resource

The remuneration you receive as an intermediate resource or a family-type resource (French only) may affect your benefit amount. You must declare this compensation to avoid having to repay an overpayment.

Steps to Declare Your Income

You can declare your income while receiving benefits by accessing your online file.

You can also contact the Centre de service à la clientèle.

Repayment of an Overpaid Amount

If you have received a benefit to which you are not entitled or an overpayment, you must repay the overpaid amount.

A notice of claim indicating the reasons, the period, the nature and the amount of the claim will be sent to you.

For full details on payment terms, see the Pay a debt owed to the Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale page.

For more information on the reasons of the claim, contact the Centre de service à la clientèle of QPIP.
