Honoré-Mercier bridge – Maintenance and reconstruction
The structure in the southbound direction (toward the south shore) requires major work. It will be rebuilt near the existing bridge and will include two traffic lanes as well as a multi-use path.
Nearly 90 years old, the Honoré Mercier bridge, located on Route 138 over the St. Lawrence Seaway, is one of the five major strategic road links between Montréal and the south shore. It also connects the Mohawk territory of Kahnawake (Kahnawà:ke in Mohawk) on the south shore with the LaSalle borough of the city of Montréal.

Work progress
The reconstruction project is currently in the planning stage. Several studies and surveys are required, in particular to better understand the environment in which the new structure will be built.
The new structure will eventually connect to the existing federal section. The existing provincial structure will then be dismantled.
The project is subject to the Directive sur la gestion des projets majeurs d’infrastructure publique [directive on the management of major public infrastructure projects], a process that establishes and governs the measures required to ensure the rigorous management of large-scale projects. The project cost and schedule will be specified at a later date.
Maintenance work on the bridge’s provincial structures
Until the major project is completed, the Honoré Mercier bridge structures require maintenance work. The following interventions are planned for 2026:
- repair and rehabilitation of certain sections of the concrete deck of the traffic lanes
- reinforcement and replacement of steel components
- painting work on the downstream bridge (toward Montréal)
Intensive weekend work periods will be required. During these closures, one traffic lane will be maintained in each direction. Closure dates will be announced through press releases as soon as they are confirmed.
Occasional evening and nighttime closures, in one direction or the other, may also take place to carry out certain maintenance or repair activities.
Rehabilitation work on certain sections of the concrete deck will require the closure of the upstream bridge (toward the south shore) and the diversion of one traffic lane onto the downstream bridge. As a result, from 11 p.m. on Friday, July 17 to 5 a.m. on Monday, August 3, during the two-week construction holiday period, one lane will be available in each direction at all times. As a counterflow configuration will be implemented on the downstream bridge, the entrance ramp from rue Airlie will be closed during this period.
Mitigation measures during the closures (July 17 to August 3)
The following mitigation measures will be implemented to limit the impact of the work on traffic in the area.
Trucking
Access to the bridge will be prohibited for trucks with three or more axles from Monday to Friday during the following periods:
- Toward Montréal: between 5 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
- Toward the south shore: between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Truck drivers are encouraged to use alternative crossings between the two shores, particularly the Samuel-De Champlain and the Jacques-Cartier bridges.
Public transit
Exo bus service schedules for the Haut-Saint-Laurent and Sud-Ouest sectors will be maintained during the two-week closure period.
In Montreal, the reserved lane from rue Airlie will be open from noon to 7 p.m., seven days a week.
On the south shore, the operating hours of the reserved lane on Route 138 eastbound will be extended. The reserved lane will be accessible from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. The bus priority traffic signal located where Route 207 intersects Routes 132 and 138 will be activated from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.
Alternative route via the Victoria bridge
Traffic management on the Victoria bridge will be adjusted as follows:
- 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.: two lanes toward Montréal
- 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.: two lanes toward the south shore
Note that heavy vehicles remain prohibited on the Victoria bridge.
